Department of Ancient and Medieval Art

Ancient Art Department studies Georgian architecture and fine arts (mural paintings, icon-painting, manuscripts and book illumination, chasing and stone plastic, enamels, ceramics and embroidery) of pre-Christian, early-Christian, medieval and late Feudal epochs, both religious and secular. Research is being carried out in the sphere of monographic studies of separate monuments, as well as in the direction of epochal, regional artistic style, iconography, technological, historic and social aspects and other issues. Important sphere of research is the Cultural Heritage preservation – problems and methodologies. The members of the department actively collaborate with the specialists of neighboring disciplines and foreign colleagues.
